Today the surface qualities demanded from solid wood are comparable to those obtained with veneers. Consequently, the requirements placed on calibrating machines in the furniture and panel industry have been extended beyond a purely dimensional stability towards a high surface quality. Heesemann machines possess important technical advantages for the calibration of solid lumber panels, solid wood frames and parquet material.

  • For high stock removal a cutter head is available. Even for solid lumber and solid wood panels with a stock removal of up to 4 mm and with a complete charge the loose fibre chips are removed by the dust extraction system to the extraction channels.
  • The quality of the cutter block guarantees optimal surface quality for this application. This is achieved by the extracting cut movement caused by the spiral position of the cutting knives. Afterwards it is considerably easier to calibrate and carry out a final sanding with a segmented pressure beam on the same machine.
  • Torsion free unit suspension, combined with solid and precise NC controlled height adjustment, ensuring dimensionally stable parts throughout the entire machine operating life.
  • A steel roller which, due to its virtually non-measurable wear and precision bearing, achieves a high degree of accuracy even when sanding aggressively.
  • High motor ratings of up to 75 kW for intensive material removal.
  • Segmented press-on lip at the infeed of the calibration roller permitting an intensive contact pressure on workpieces with differing thickness even with multi-track feeding.
  • The cross sanding technology employed for the downstream fine sanding units avoids the washing out effect encountered with soft woods resulting from different annular ring hardness and ensures a flat sanded surface of knots characterized by varying wood hardness.
  • A greater jump in grit sizes is possible between rollers and cross sanding unit due to the aggressive sanding attack of the cross belt.
  • The CSD® electromagnetic pressure beam technology, with infinite pressure regulation of each pressure element, precludes a rounding of the edges on calibrated surfaces.
  • An effective and cost saving extraction and belt cleaning which can even handle large dust quantities.

Panel processing

Dimension accuracy and fine surfaces also play an important role in the calibration of chipboard, MDF, wood core plywood and plywood. Surfaces must be perfectly sanded especially for subsequent lamination or coating with foils. To this must be added a high working capacity and functional safety as special processing requirements to be able to cope with large production quantities as encountered in the panel industry. Heesemann calibration machines meet this requirement. They combine modern technology and capacity reserves.

Veneer sanding

The application of veneered workpieces is just as versatile as their multitude of design possibilities. In everyday production we encounter crosswise or longitudinally veneered workpieces, with rounded, rectangular, irregular shapes, with and without cutouts. In addition, an increasing spectrum of parts are to be sanded, from soft to hard veneers - in part with inlay work on one side - or with overhanging solid lippings. Due to economic reasons veneers become thinner and thinner. For this reason particularly innovative sanding technology solutions must imply a high degree of flexibility for industrially manufactured veneered parts.

 

Heesemann veneer sanding machines are equipped for this task with:

  • a wide, elastic pressure beam for the cross and longitudinal belts which ensures a large contact surface with the workpiece.
  • a sensitive workpiece sensing.
  • the unique infinite electromagnetic CSD® pressure regulation, which also precludes the danger of sanding through in edge areas and cutouts.
  • a tolerance compensation of 2 mm and more in the pressure beam permitting the clean sanding of warped parts or those with deviating thickness.
  • computer controlled automatic pressure calculation for the individual pressure shoes, which, for example, calculates an asymmetric pressure presetting in the event of a solid lipping on one edge.
  • cross sanding units, which cut off wood fibres across the grain. At the same time the cross sanding units give cross veneered parts a final sanding in veneer direction.
  • a workpiece suction device, which ensures the secure transport of small parts such as drawer fronts.
  • safety circuit and electronic brakes on the units avoid damage to the workpieces in the event of a belt rupture.
  • a programme memory for storing various sanding settings for different veneer types, to reduce setting time to a minimum.

Lacquer sanding and high-gloss production

Lacquer sanding

The trend is clear - applied low quantities and stains and lacquers containing as little solvent as possible. For surface finishing UV lacquers with a high solids content, water based lacquers, waxes and low solvent stains are increasingly being used. Application quantities of markedly less than 10 g/m2 are no longer rare occurences.

Heesemann sanding machine technology has taken this development into account ready for the future:

  • the infinite CSD® electromagnetic pressure regulation of the individual pressure elements in the pressure beam which permit an intensive but careful sanding of the endangered side, front and rear edges.
  • the elastic pressure beam which optimally compensates for frequent tolerances within or between workpieces up to 2 mm max. without sanding through.
  • the intermeshing pressure shoes which ensure gentle transitions on the surface and which avoid streakings.
  • wide pressure beams for a uniform surface sanding attack.
  • the frequency controlled sanding belt drives with a wide regulation range of 1:40, permitting the belt speed to be infinitely adapted to the individual lacquer and stain quality.
  • servo drives allow minimum sanding belt speeds of 0.1 m/s.
  • wide range of structuring and smoothening brushes for special finishing effects.
  • thorough sanding belt cleaning, preventing sanding marks resulting from adhering dust grains.
  • different interfaces serving as the prerequisite for linking into lacquer lines.

High gloss sanding

For high gloss surfaces the combination of cross and longitudinal sanding belts is established. Heesemann employs cross sanding machines here, with which even at fine grits a constant material teardown is effected and by cross sanding method a high quality surface is achieved. This technology results in a constantly plane surface.

When working with a machine with 3 cross units and 1 longitudinal sanding unit 3 to 4 passes through the machine are necessary for sanding raw MDF material up to the finished product if it is sanded with a grit of 600 or 800. If melamine-laminated MDF material has to be sanded the first working step could possibly be saved. The special advantage of a machine with 4 units is that no more than one pass through the machine in between the individual lacquering processes is required.

 

1st pass through the machine

If necessary (depending on the thickness tolerances of the raw material) calibration with activated calibration guide roller using a grit of 120. The cross units sand in the same pass through the machine with grits of 180 and 240 so that the workpiece is calibrated and sanded in one pass and is ready for lacquering.

 

2nd pass through the machine

Filler sanding with one cross, one longitudinal and one cross sanding unit e. g. with grits of 320, 360 and 400.

 

3rd pass through the machine

After applying base coat:
Lacquer sanding with all 4 units with a grit of 320 or 360 on the first cross unit, 400 on the longitudinal unit, 500 on the second cross and 600 on the third cross unit. For a final grit of 800 it is recommendable to sand with a grit sequence of 360/400/600/800.

 

If at this stage already a top coat will be used as the substrate for polishing the grit sequence can be 600 / 800 / 1,000 / 1,200 prior to polishing.

 

4th pass through the machine

Depending on the type of used top coat and required final quality the top coat could be just polished or could be sanded with grits of 1,200 and 1,500 mm prior to polishing.
